Safari Seasons

Tanzania’s safari seasons promise unique adventures year-round, from the drama of the Great Migration to the lush Green Season and prime wildlife viewing in the dry months. Each season offers something extraordinary for every explorer.

  • Join one of nature’s most iconic events as millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles traverse Serengeti’s vast plains. From calving in the southern grasslands to the dramatic Mara River crossings in the north, every moment is a spectacle of survival and beauty.

    About the Migration

Each year, over two million animals—including more than one million wildebeests, a quarter of a million zebras, and half a million Thomson's gazelles—undertake a remarkable circular migration in the Serengeti. Known worldwide as the Great Serengeti Migration, this phenomenon begins at the boundary between Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti, where the animals calve. They migrate clockwise to northern Serengeti, crossing the Mara River into Kenya’s Masai Mara reserve. After a second river crossing, they rejoin some of the zebras and gazelles left behind and return to southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro to start the cycle anew.

Best Time to Witness the Migration

    • December to April: Animals arrive in southern Serengeti from the north to graze and give birth.

    • May to July: Animals move to western Serengeti as southern grass dries out, grazing along the Grumeti River, which they cross.

    • August to November: Animals reach northern Serengeti, where the dramatic Mara River crossing of the wildebeests can be observed.

  • Witness Tanzania’s lush landscapes bursting with life as newborn animals take their first steps. This season of renewal offers vibrant scenery, unique wildlife encounters, and fewer visitors—perfect for tranquil exploration.

  • Step into Tanzania’s dry season, where wildlife converges near dwindling water sources. Roam open plains and marvel at extraordinary game-viewing opportunities in legendary parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

  • Delve into the heart of Tanzania’s forests to track wild chimpanzees during the dry season. Ideal trekking conditions in Mahale and Gombe offer unparalleled access to these fascinating creatures.
